The author dedicates this book to fellow tourists. He travels on the Laconia, the second cruise ship ever to circle South America, going through the canal and straits of Magellan which is over 14,000 nautical miles. Anderson offers advice on what to bring, wear, and see as well as providing a small amount of historical and political facts. Many black and white illustrations included.

Black discusses a "new way" to South America which makes it easier for people to travel there. Instead of going from New York to Buenos Aires, one can actually just travel through the Andes. He spends thirty two days on ships, six days on trains, two days in an automobile, and one day in an American hydro-aero plane. Black also discusses interviews he had with civilians and government officials.

Boyce attempts to give a very comprehensive travel account of South America. He has separated each chapter into countries, ( i.e. Chile, Bolivia, Argentina). Boyce talks about their government, population, culture, and important landmarks. A color map and black and white pictures are included.

Charlotte Cameron presents a day-to-day account of her trip to South America. There are several black and white pictures of the boat she sails on, the train she travels on, and the people and places she sees. There are also two chapters dedicated to her living quarters in numerous hotels.

Currier is a priest and a delegate of the Catholic University of America and provides insight on the religion of several of the South American countries. He also mentions briefly the expenses involved when traveling to South America during the early 20th century.

Captain Fitz Roy chooses Darwin to accompany him on a naturalist survey of the coast of South America in 1831. Darwin employs a vivid descriptive style when describing the plants, animals, and native inhabitants of the lands he sees. Darwin also examines the geology of the countries he visits and draws far-reaching conclusions that are later published in "The Origin of Species". He is completely captivated by the diversity of the natural world and produces a very readable story, drawing conclusions based on scientific reasoning.

Domville-Fife presents a very factual book, with virtually no "entertainment" value.

The author and other fellow travelers are sailing on a vessel to South America in search of gold. Gerstäcker is very detailed when he explains what his fellow passengers look and act like. He also mentioned briefly immigrants who are coming from Germany on the same vessel. Gerstäcker travels to Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Valparalso. Translated from German.

Halsey has the book divided into five chapters. These include studies from: Panama to Lima, Lima to Santiago, Santiago to Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro and Rio de Janeiro to Curityba, Paraná.

Throughout this small book, Harrison demonstrates her appreciation of South America and its people. She consistently notes the changes in customs as she visits different cities. Harrison's journey of the South Seas starts off at the Isthmus of Panama; she eventually she visits La Paz and provides a very vivid description of Lake Titicaca.

The author is a scientist who travels to South America and combines his appreciation of the country with his field of study. According to Humboldt, "It is without difficulty that I present to the public a series of papers which took their origin in the presence of natural scenes of grandeur or of beauty on the ocean, in the forests of the Orinoco, in the Steppes of Venezuela, and in the mountains of Perú and México.

In the editor's note, it suggests, "Tale of two lively American women taking in the activity of the crowded city streets and squares, the teeming markets and shops but also the ocean beaches and mountains and put all in their published diary". The sisters also visited many schools and hospitals.

This book gives good insight to the issues of racism during the beginning of the twentieth century. Mackellar talks about his feelings and those of other passengers around him on the journey to South America. Aboard the vessel are many different types of people and he addresses British thoughts of African Americans on their way to the West Indies and of the natives that they will soon meet.

Ruhl demonstrates that there is another beautiful country beyond our U.S. borders. For example, he states, "People have assumed that there was such a place- vaguely comic and bizarre, inseparably attached, somehow to the words fevers and revolutions." Sears presents more of a story than a reference book. She includes word for word conversations between her and her husband. Sears expresses doubt before arriving to South America but as the story continues the reader can note their changing opinions as they start to see all of the culture and history of South America.

Sherwood lived in South America for a long period of time and had his journal published so that other travelers could get a better feel for South America. He discusses the highways, shops, and churches of all the various countries and cities. Sherwood also visits Iquique, Antofagasta, and the Nitrate Desert among many other places.

Rex Stout wrote in the introduction, "It is a simple straightforward narrative of an exciting adventure-for very few young men head for the jungle to hunt orchids, and fewer still find them and bring them back." The author and his companion board a ship and go to Ascension on the Rio Claro, and find five thousand plants of Cattleya Trianae and supply numerous pictures of their journey.

Clark separates his book into two parts. Part one discusses his trip from Colon to Lima. He provides a lot of historical notes including the war between the Perúvians and the Chileans. Climate and elevation of these cities and neighboring ones are also included. In part two, Clark focuses on the people of the Sierra and their cultures.

Dyott begins his narration with an outline of his journey and preliminary arrangements. He describes the climates and altitudes in all of the regions he travels through from Perú to the Amazon. With vivid detail, Dyott talks about his modes of transportation, which include traveling by mule, by foot, and in a canoe. He also takes account of the natives that he meets and the land all around him. Black and white illustrations are incorporated.

Volume one is dedicated to the casual traveler, and includes the author's visits along the coast from Arica to San Jose, to the interior of Arequipa and Ica, and then through the Valley of Jejetepeque up to Machucana. He travels by foot, railway, and boat. Volume two provides a look at the miltary situation in Perú and contains information on battles and government affairs in 1873.

Sandeman presents his travel and botanical notes in the form of a diary of his three month long journey through Perú. He primarily travels on foot and in a canoe and focuses mainly on the Haullaga River, from its source in the Perúvian Andes to the tropical town of Yurimaguas. Sandeman also talks about several new species of plants he finds.

Sandeman supplies 191 illustrations of Pre-Incan and Incan civilization, the Great Colonial period, the War of Liberation, and characteristic scenery of plants and people. Each of these pictures has historical reference and explanation. Sandeman also provides a timeline from 1492 until 1942 and landmarks in Perú's history.
